For two decades, the world’s poorest countries were making progress in closing the human development gap. This trend has now reversed, and inequality between countries is on the rise.

At the same time, lack of trust and political polarization is growing with global repercussions. 9 in 10 people support the ideal of democracy, but more than half of the global population also report supporting leaders that can bypass parliaments and elections.

Shared global challenges, such as climate change, zoonotic disease outbreaks, or violent conflicts and displacement, are outpacing our willingness and our institutions’ ability to respond to them.

Why, despite all our riches, technologies and know-how, are we failing to act at the scale and pace necessary to address these globally shared challenges?  And is it possible to mobilize action in a world that is intensively polarized?

Join us at the Sweden launch of this year's UNDP Human Development Report where we will explore the roots of polarization, democratic backsliding and its devastating impact on sustainable development and offer a platform for discussion on how to advance human development and safeguard human security in a divided world.
